Jeremy Renner is back in his first acting role since his near-fatal snowplow accident last year. On Thursday, Paramount released the trailer for the upcoming third season of Mayor of Kingstown, featuring Renner in his returning role as Mike McLusky.
Renner is “back in business” in the trailer, delivering an eerie voiceover about the difference between good and evil. According to a logline for Season Three, “a series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Renner) to end the war, but things get complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatens to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions.”
Renner returned to the Kingstown set one year following his accident, in which he was badly injured after being run over by a snowplow at his home near Lake Tahoe. The actor broke more than 30 bones, including eight ribs in 14 places, his right knee, right ankle, left leg tibia, left ankle, right clavicle, and right shoulder. He also sustained injuries to his face and suffered a collapsed lung.
At the time of the accident, Renner was at his home on New Year’s Day 2023 when his adult nephew’s truck got stuck in the snow. The actor attempted to use his Pistenbully snow groomer to dislodge the vehicle when the snow plow started sliding downhill.
“I just happened to be the dummy standing on the dang track a little bit, seeing if my nephew was there. You shouldn’t be outside the vehicle when you’re operating it, you know what I mean? It’s like driving a car with one foot out of the car,” Renner described during an interview with Diane Sawyer. “But it is what it was. And it’s my mistake, and I paid for it.”
Renner jumped out but didn’t engage its emergency brake; when he saw the seven-ton vehicle hurtling toward his nephew, he tried to jump back in but was pulled under one of the tracks. “That’s when I screamed, by the way, when I went under the thing,” said the actor. “‘Not today, motherfucker!’ is what I screamed.”
After months of physical therapy to fully recover from the accident, Renner admitted that he was nervous to return to work. “Hope this works out that I can ACTUALLY pull this off for our production and more importantly the fans,” he wrote on Instagram on his first day back on set for Mayor of Kingstown.
