Rep. Jared Moskowitz has been taking Republicans to task all day over their obsession with Hunter Biden
House Republicans held a hearing on Wednesday as part of their push to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena to testify behind closed doors. The president’s son has said he will testify publicly about his business dealings overseas, and even showed up to the hearing on Wednesday, but Republicans haven’t been interested in transparency, insisting on questioning him privately — which would allow them to cherry pick what to reveal about the proceedings.
But Biden’s surprise appearance on Capitol Hill to expose how scared the GOP is of having him testify was only the beginning of a disastrous day for Republicans. Democrats had a field day taking their colleagues to task for their hypocrisy. Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) did so on several occasions, including over Republicans turning their dignity over to a former president with connections to a pedophile.
In response to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) holding up pornographic photos of Hunter Biden in a strained effort to make a point about Democrats ignoring human trafficking, Moskowitz held up a image of Donald Trump grinning next to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. “Donald Trump was asked about Jeffrey Epstein,” he said, “and when he was asked, he said Jeffrey likes them young, but how did the president know that? How did he know that Jeffrey Epstein like them young? Perhaps, some people are saying, he was there.”
Trump has tried to distance himself from Epstein since the financier was convicted of sex trafficking, but Trump spoke glowingly of him in the past. “I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,” Trump told New York magazine in 2002. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”
Moskowitz wasn’t done pointing out Trump’s connection to Epstein. “You come up here and talk about Hunter Biden’s behavior, and you’re so disgusted, but the guy that you all kneel to associates himself with a pedophile,” he continued. Republicans were quick to object and Moskowitz ultimately changed his phrasing from “kneel to” to “very much support.”
The hearing on Wednesday is only the latest in a string of Republican stunts focused on Hunter Biden’s business dealings and personal life, which they believe they can use to create the impression that his father is corrupt and of bad character. Considering the wealth of actual evidence of Trump’s corruption and bad character, the party might want to start rethinking their strategy.
