Okay, we all know Dolly Parton is Miley Cyrus' godmother. But now we know the two are actually related. Distantly, but there you have it. The singers actually have a relative in common who was born in the 18th century. Parton told Access Hollywood on Monday that the news didn't surprise her, because being with Miley is “like being with family.” The results came from the analysis of Ancestry, a site that allows you to trace your family tree.
“We’re so close, Miley and I,” Parton said of their close bond. “I would have thought we’d be at least third cousins.” Miley and Dolly are both related to John Brickey, a man born in 1740 who left Virginia with his family for Blount County, Tennessee. The news makes Parton and Cyrus seventh cousins.
The news of the generational ties comes as Parton is working on her next musical, visual, and decidedly intergenerational project: Smoky Mountain DNA—Family, Faith & Fables. Parton's cousin, Richie Owens, produced the album, Parton's niece, Heidi Parton, sings lead vocals on A Rose Won't Fix Itand contributions from family members who have passed away, including Parton's late grandfather, the Reverend Jake Owens, are incorporated into some of the songs. 37 tracks that will premiere in a four-part docuseries.
“I can’t believe it’s been 60 years this month since I graduated from Sevier County High School and moved to Nashville to pursue my dreams,” Parton said in a statement. “My uncle Bill Owens has been by my side for many years, helping me develop my music. I owe so much to him and all the family members past and present who have inspired me on this journey. I’m honored to shine a light on our families’ musical legacy.”
