From the Modenese underground scene to the afterhours stage: i Cries They are one of the bands selected by the “Fresh – sound from the future” project, conceived by Manuel Agnelli to enhance the new Italian music.
With a sound that blends grunge, metal and psychedelia, i Cries They tell each other in this interview between important debuts, shared influences and the urgent need to create an authentic and free scene from labels.
1. Let's start from the beginning: how did you learn about the “fresh meat” project and what did you mean for you to participate?
We were the first band to perform at the fresco flesh review. That evening something magical happened both for us and for the Germi staff … it is as if a fuse had turned on that then fueled everything that is happening now. For us it was a turning point, the moment when we realized that our music could be important for someone and surely it made us believe more in ourselves.
2. Get on stage as an opening act of the tour of an iconic band such as Afterhours: what emotions did you feel when you learned that you had been chosen?
We were very excited when we learned of the opening to the Afterhours, some of us already had the ticket to go and see them this summer …

3. How important is it for an emerging band like your being able to count on initiatives such as “fresh meat”? Do you think that there is still room for new levers in the Italian scene?
Counting on fresh meat is important yes. It is obvious that beautiful opportunities can arise in this context. The most important thing that this experience has left us is to try to learn to exploit the space and artists we know. The goal is to create a scene, make it independent but also let us influence each other, to always be open, experiment and create new music.
4. Is there a song of your repertoire that you feel better represent your identity? What will be the song with which you want to leave your mark from the stage?
We sincerely believe no. We will bring the songs of the EP to which we are most fond and the last one we wrote. With the time we have been granted we managed to choose the “messages” and the atmospheres that represent us most. The thing that interests us most is to hit with our emotionality and energy.

5. Your sound melts grunge, metal and psychedelia. How was this alchemy born and what are your main influences?
Our musical identity is formed by mixing the influences that each member brings to the studio. We are very “democratic” from this point of view. In fact, the process of writing the songs is not so simple because it happens that there are discrepancies but it is a choice in which we believe and that we also want to defend to ensure that the new pieces sound different from each other while maintaining a certain consistency.
There are those who are more fond of metal, who instead refers to the Italian rock of the 90s. Let's say that the latter are taking advantage of it as a vocabulary to build our language. The artists we share most (how listening) are certainly the tools and Verdena …
6. In 2024 you debuted with your first eponymous ep. How was it to build your sound identity in such a short time and what do you want to communicate with this first job?
Our EP was born after 3 years of live around Modena. And at this point we wanted to get out of our city: for this reason we had the album go out. We continue to see him as a “attempt” because we still did not have a defined sound identity and perhaps we had no idea what we wanted to do, sincerely said.
However, after a year, we are very satisfied with our pieces and we understood which “they resonate” more in us, this is what indicates what is the direction to go.
