New album from Hell In The Club and a lot of surprise for the debut of Tezzi Persson (Infinite & Divine, Venus 5), Swedish singer who replaces Damna, historic frontman and founder, who left the band due to the too many commitments of his main group, Elvenking.
The general approach at Hell In The Club does not change that much in their seventh studio album, entitled “Joker In The Pack” – two years after the previous “FUBAR” – but we also notice greater power in the production phase and some more dynamic passages, certainly dictated by the enormous vocal abilities of the talented Tezzi.
The impact of her voice is more than positive: it is true that Damna, her predecessor, has a decidedly recognizable timbre, with a unique style, but the Swedish singer manages to be much more flexible and multifaceted, changing register with extreme ease, enriching the sound with shades close to the blues. In short, a notable purchase for the band who could hardly find anything better.
And if we are welcomed by the usual explosive riffs that accompany the vibrant opener “The Devil Won't Forget Me”, with the presence of earth-shaking bass lines and full, heavy guitars, and the gritty “New Desire”, the more modern sound of “Robert The Doll” and the rock/blues touch of “Pretty Little Freak Show” are new features that give freshness to the sound – always very linked to the eighties scene – signed by Hell In The Clubs.
Persson's highly expressive voice is enhanced during the melancholy slow “The Ocean”, before returning to more classically rock territory with the carefree “Magnetars”.
Among the most successful moments, the lilting and catchy “Out In The Distance” must certainly be mentioned, with vocal lines that are immediately appreciated and the final “When The Veil Of Night Falls”, with a construction of the song that presents progressive solutions.
In short, we don't mind the singer who is currently also in Elvenking (who we also appreciated and adored so much even in this most rocking adventure of his), but perhaps his absence in this new “Joker In The Pack” weighs more on the songwriting side than on the vocal one: Damna, in his career, has always shown himself to be a huge music lover with great inspiration even in the composition phase of the songs, and what is missing here are precisely a couple of enthralling hits capable of immediately leaving an impression.
Hell In The Club probably still need some time to calibrate things: in the meantime they have inaugurated a new era that could bring even more satisfaction in the future, opening new paths thanks to the entry of the new and extraordinary singer Tezzi Persson, capable of immediately showing off with amazing vocal skills, which can be exploited in an even more targeted way.
