D'wi Wiggins, singer, guitarist and co-founder of Tony! Toni! Toné!, Died on Friday 7 March. He was 64 years old.
Wiggins' family confirmed his death in a press release, explaining that the musician died on Friday morning “surrounded by friends and loved ones”. The family said that in the last year Wiggins had “struggled privately and courageously against bladder cancer”, adding: “During this struggle, she was busy and present for her family, her music, her fans and its community”.
The press release continues: «D'Awi's life has been incomparable and her music has had an impact on millions of people all over the world, also in her hometown, Oakland, California. He was guitarist, producer, composer, philanthropist, mentor and founding member of Tony! Toni! Toné!. He loved helping young emerging musicians, helping to shape their careers ».
Wiggins and his brother Raphael Wiggins (better known as Raphael Saadiq) have co-founded Tony! Toni! Toné! With the cousin Timothy Christian in Oakland, where they grew up. Between 1988 and 1996, the group became one of the reference projects of the time, with its mix of R&B, Soul, Funk and New Jack Swing.
