Donna Jean Godchaux, former lead singer of the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 82. Godchaux died in a nursing home after a long battle with cancer.
His legal representative, Dennis McNally, announced the news: «He was a sweet and warm person. All those who knew her are united in grief.” «The family requests privacy in this time of mourning. As Dead lyricist Robert Hunter said, “May the four winds bring her safely home.”
Godchaux joined the Grateful Dead in '71 with her husband Keith. The two were in the band until 1979, shortly before Keith's passing in 1980. Before joining the band, Donna was a session worker at Muscle Shoals Studios in Alabama. In those years he provided vocals for songs such as Suspicious Minds And In The Ghetto by Elvis Presley, also working with Cher and Neil Diamond.
The Grateful Dead wanted to remember their singer with a message: «It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Donna Jean Godchaux. His unmistakable voice and radiant spirit have touched the lives of countless fans and enriched the Grateful Dead family immensely. His contribution will forever remain an integral part of the mosaic that continues to be woven. We offer our deepest condolences to his loved ones and ask for respect for his family's privacy during this difficult time.”
Bob Weir, founding member of the band, also wanted to share his thoughts: «He opened a path in music that many aspire to follow».
