One day Luca Galizia made a little drawing of a small animal that was not easily identifiable; from that event came the name that made him famous in the Italian underground circuit: Generic Animal. Born in the province of Varese, but having moved to Milan some time ago, Luca – guitarist at the beginning in Leute – with “Il canto dell'asino” not only reaches the finish line of his fifth solo album, but also creates his most successful album so far, the result of three long years of work.
Celebration and story of the end of its author's twenties, “Il canto dell'asino” shifts Galizia's stylistic center of gravity towards a form of indie-rock capable of completely freeing itself from the trap accents of the beginning, maintaining a certain connection with the electronic, r&b influences and some country folk interludes (“Stare 1”).
“Zero”, placed at the beginning tracklistimmediately determines the scope of reference, a writing that fuses in a personal way the nu-soul songwriting of Venerus with the songwriting and nervous guitars of Verdena, ready to make their way at the 1'40'' minute while Luca sings unequivocally autobiographical verses : “My music is strange and doesn't sell at all / Who knows if my moment will come”. And the moment is here and now, with Marta del Grandi as guest on duty, to set her speech (in Italian) among the soft jazz veins that characterize the ending of “Karaoke”.
Alongside Generic Animal we find the historic collaborator Fight Pausa in the mixing room; the production is instead shared between Galizia himself and Giacomo Mazzucato, known by the stage name Yakamoto Kotzuga, musician, composer and sound designer Venetian, on the Sugar roster, one of those you can meet today on the Sonar stage and tomorrow receiving the recognition of inclusion among the ten most listened to Italian authors in the world: it happened in 2022.
