What do Morrissey, Francesco Guccini, Lana Del Rey, Sir Paul McCartney have in common; and again: Marracash, Lauryn Hill and Lenny Kravitz? At least two things: they are all singers by profession and, above all, they are all Gemini. Personalities at the antipodes, often enigmatic, sarcastic and obsessed with intellectual life. The sign of Gemini, the tormented conclusion of spring after the impetuous and virile Aries and the Dionysian and feminine Taurus, is the androgynous sign of questioning, of splitting and of awakening the thirst for knowledge. Air sign is by its nature volatile, unpredictable, constantly distracted by its own thoughts but no less lucid for this; tormented by mood swings and the rational need for irrationality, he goes in search of intellectual stimuli and experiences. Adventurous and sagacious, he represents a synthesis between the vigorous and sinewy approach to the experience of Aries and the pleasure-loving wait-and-see attitude of Taurus.
A lover of dialogue and communication, he is no less introverted for this: in his relationship with others he often protects his changing thoughts with a histrionic mask made of theatricality and sarcasm. A skilled planner, the greatest risk for a Gemini is his own tendency to self-sabotage: tossed between one interest and another, if he loses concentration or if he simply gets fed up, he risks not completing anything and going crazy. Almost impossible lover, at times hasty, attracted by novelty and changes, he could even forget to warn you that he has no intention of seeing you again. The carnal, natural and emotional component are fundamental in any relationship with a Gemini: they are in fact forms of experience and knowledge that he/she exalts and that exalts him/her. In his heart, or rather, in one of the two, however, he dreams of an intellectual connection that lasts forever and that leads to total and eternal complicity.
If there’s something you want to try, ask me: I could never say no. The song by the Smiths (from 1987) encloses in the simplest of sentences the Gemini’s approach to something new: faced with the shyness, modesty and fears of others, the Gemini instead are waiting for nothing but to experiment. Saying no would be against their nature, and they understand and encourage every perversion, deviation, curiosity and stimulus without ever judging anyone and, on the contrary, intriguing themselves.
See dear
Francesco Guccini
“You see dear, it’s difficult to explain”: partly because words are slower than thoughts, and those of Gemini whirl and chase each other away at the speed of light; partly because explaining would mean choosing a clipping of a changing personality and handing it over to someone else’s interpretation, and somehow making a commitment and creating expectations. It’s hard to explain kite flying if you haven’t already figured it out.
“I is another”. The best Morgan quotes Rimbaud in a sensational synthesis of dualism and inner division that has made the history of thought and poetry. But that’s not all: he adds another passage that oozes Gemini from every pore. The solution is not the East, but being able to go there at will. Adventure, travel and knowledge for its own sake: because in every Gemini there is a little Ulysses ready to sail the seas of the whole world just to get to know and go beyond his own limits, beyond the Pillars of Hercules.
Do I Wanna Know?
Arctic Monkeys
Faced with these changeable, clever and little Ulysses then there are the rest of us, who the more we look at them the less we understand them. The answer to Turner’s question in the famous Arctic Monkeys song is “no”. We don’t want to know, we don’t want to know what’s going on in a Gemini’s head, and we don’t want to know because we’ve spent so much money on psychotherapy and there’s no need to screw it up.
Ambiguous song, which at times seems to speak of drugs, at times of love, which then love and drugs are often the same thing. What is striking about this piece is the choice of the components of the relationship (whether it’s with a person or with a syringe, it doesn’t matter much) that make this “sweet prince” the only one: sweat, desire, shame and above all the fact that all of this was unexpected (“never thought I’d…”). Sinuous and intellectual sensuality, the need to fuck your brains and fuck your brains: this is the love of a Gemini, this is what it takes to make it last forever.
