The evening with a slightly surreal aftertaste that you don't expect, the perfect culmination of a Saturday packed with unexpected events. September is the time for new beginnings, and the reopening of the Covo Club in Bologna was in the name of the avant-garde with Föllakzoid, the creation of the artist, musician and director Domingæ Garcia Huidobro. To warm up the atmosphere (and prepare the eardrums) properly is the mixture dark techno and industrial-punk of the Torba project by Luigi Pianezzola (Soft Moon, I Am Titor, Bruuno), in a trio formation. The ones who stand out are the powerful beat distorted from the latest single “Wire”, while some proposals taken from the homonymous debut “Torba” (2023) take on sharper contours in their live version, further loaded by the drum rhythms, but not always effective and distinguishable; among the best passages stands out the choral “Repeat”, in the Giant Swan area.
In the wake of the long intro synthetic entrusted to battery and synth/consoleon which the burden of weaving the sound textures for the whole will fall most setthe mysterious figure of Domingæ makes her appearance among the audience, heading towards the stage with two lit candles in her hand. The scene is in semi-darkness and will remain so for a good part of the performance, apart from very few flashes of light. The latest album “V” (2023) is performed in a single flow of thought, with a more decisive push towards the pounding club techno quota. Domingæ is the absolute dominator of the stage and of what turns out to be a real performance artistic made of precise and calibrated rituals and gestures, going beyond the concept of a traditional concert. The artist dances, leads the sound engineer and his companions like a sort of orchestra conductor, sometimes takes up the guitar and fiddles with the pedals, between a blessing to the audience with his bottle of water, a stripteaseone “stage diving of the candles”, passed from hand to hand among the audience (a valuable quote from a dear friend, dutiful, even if perhaps the right term in this case could have been crowd surfing; but regardless of the words, the article's pen was focused on the terror of burning one's hair), a lit cigarette and a nice toast.
Seductive and hypnotic, but also quite abstract, and for this reason perhaps not suitable for everyone, the magnetic performance of Föllakzoid is practically impossible to forget and at the same time complex to explain; what is certain is that if the aim was to induce tranceamong the sounds, the lights and the whirlwind of gestures, has been largely achieved. Having taken off the clothes of performer sophisticated and a little “established”, Domingæ and his friends will have a blast at the dj setblending in with the regulars of the club. The new season seems to have started off on the right foot and, among lots of good music, old and new friends, and a few stolen kisses on the dance floor, at the Covo Club there will be many other stories to tell.
