Florence Pugh is the latest celebrity to have been publicly pelted by an object thrown at her while at an event. The actress was attending a Dune: Part Two Panel at Comic-Con in São Paolo, Brazil on Sunday alongside costars Timothée Chalamat, Austin Butler, and Zendaya posing for photos when something was thrown and hit her face.
In videos shared on social media, it’s unclear what was thrown, but it did hit her square in the face by her eye. In a clip, she’s seen to be saying what looks to be “Oh wow” and reaches for the object on the ground.
Prior to the incident, she shared her thoughts about working on the film. “I had an amazing time coming in and just hanging around with these people, let alone actually getting to work with them,” she said. “Coming in here — the power in this room — is because of that first movie, and we felt that when we went on set every single day. So it feels really, really special being here with the second one,” she said during the panel.
While Pugh appeared to be relatively unscathed following the incident, that hasn’t been the case for others who have appeared on stage and been hit by something thrown by a person in the audience. In June, Bebe Rexha was hit in the face by a flying cell phone, an incident that required stitches.
Last year Harry Styles was pelted in the eye after a misguided fan tossed Skittles candy at the stage. Country artist Kelsea Ballerini was also hit by a bracelet hurled at her last summer, prompting her to tell the audience: “If anyone’s pushing too much or you just have that gut feeling, just always flag it. Don’t throw things.” Adele addressed the idiotic, dangerous behavior during her Las Vegas residency. “Have you noticed how people are like, forgetting fucking show etiquette at the moment? People just throwing shit on stage, have you seen them?” Adele said to the audience while touting a T-shirt gun during one of her Weekends With Adele shows. “These people have lost it, could you imagine?”
Earlier this month, Taylor Swift stopped one of her shows in Buenos Aires to ask fans not to throw things. “It really freaks me out,” she said, adding, “Because communication means having gentle, healthy boundaries, it really freaks me out when stuff gets thrown on the stage, because if it’s on the stage then a dancer can trip on it,” Swift said. “I love that you brought presents and that is so nice, but just can you please not throw them on the stage. I love you so much.”
