After last year's appetizer EP, here are Feral Forms dealing with the full-length format and with the competition of a trend, that of the most poisonous and paroxysmal black/death, which for some time now can be said to be enjoying good visibility even outside the usual underground circuits, thanks to the resonance of the raids carried out by sonic terrorists such as Antichrist Siege Machine and Concrete Winds.
Intercepted by the now reliable Everlasting Spew, no stranger to forays of this type, see also what was done with Deathsiege a few years ago, the quartet from Trieste faces the strong commitment of the experience gained by some of its members in other projects (Grime and The Secret above all), putting together a tracklist in which blind fury and a certain amount of rigor coexist without stepping on each other's toes.
At first, what is striking about “Through Demonic Spell” is obviously the feverish and degenerate interpretation that envelops the various songs like a homicidal fog; the barbaric attitude which, both on an instrumental and vocal level, leads us to dust off the 'war metal' tag and come to terms with a concept of music that is nothing short of ferocious and percussive, in which there is apparently no room for reasoning or easing of tension.
Instead, paying a little more attention and climbing over the barrier erected by the screaming, it is evident that at the basis of this diabolical flow – well rendered by the photo chosen as artwork – there is a writing that is not interested in throwing it 'into the mess' , preferring to play with the three-dimensionality of the sound and giving the right emphasis to the concept of riff.
If a group like the aforementioned Concrete Winds literally never lets go, to the point of inducing asphyxiation and attracting as many favors as criticisms due to its monothematic approach, Feral Forms aim for a less alienating proposal comparable to that of the Nineties by Angelcorpse or the more recent one by Lvcifyre of “The Calling Depths”, therefore trying to modulate the speed (however very sustained) and to give greater movement to the collection, divided between flash carnage (“Angelcide”, “Prelude”) and 'composite' parentheses in which the duration reaches almost five minutes (“Monastery Raid”, “Titanomachia”, “Antichrist Congregation”).
This foresight ensures that the album does not burn out like a sudden blaze, but burns, inviting replay and providing hooks to hold on to while listening (think of the riff of “Hellish Nuke” or the ghostly melodies that here and there break aggression), with our band who, having reached this point, definitely have a base on their side from which to start to make a name for themselves among fans of certain sounds.
If you belong to the category, the invitation is not to underestimate its destructive capabilities.
