Special counsel David Weiss has been gathering evidence on possible criminal tax charges against President Joe Biden’s son, CNN reported
Hunter Biden is facing new criminal charges, CNN first reported on Thursday. According to the outlet, federal prosecutors filed a new criminal case against President Joe Biden’s son, but the exact details of the charges were not immediately released.
In 2018, the Justice Department opened an investigation into Hunter’s finances amid allegations of money laundering. The FBI was ultimately unable to find evidence indicating Biden had engaged in money laundering, and the case moved into an investigation of Biden’s tax history.
In September, Hunter was indicted on three counts related to possessing a firearm while under the influence of narcotics. The following month, he pleaded not guilty to the federal firearms charges.
House Republicans have taken aim on Hunter’s legal issues, arguing they are evidence of the president’s corruption despite having little evidence to prove their suspicions. In April, the committee issued six subpoenas for financial records related to business entities and associates of Hunter. Although the committee claims Hunter used his father’s position as vice president in the Obama administration and current role as president to secure favorable financial deals for himself and his family, these allegations remain unproven.
News of the new criminal charges against Biden’s son arrives after House Republicans announced their plan to vote next week to formalize an impeachment inquiry into the president over Hunter’s foreign business dealings.
