In recent days, Evan Dando of the Lemonheads was admitted to hospital to receive psychiatric treatment. A few days later, his wife Antonia Teixeira spoke about the musician's difficult moment.
Teixeira, in a message on his social media, first had his say on the accusations that Dando received from a fan, saying he was aware of the “inappropriate online exchanges” in what he believed to be “consensual sexting”. “It is not an excuse for his behavior, nor do I want to minimize what happened,” she explained: “No one deserves to receive unsolicited sexual content and I am sorry for the distress created. I personally apologized to the woman in question.”
According to his wife, Dando is “struggling with alcoholism, prescription drug abuse and serious mental health problems.” The artist is now “in rehab to overcome abuse and mental health problems.”
«I made it clear to him that it is essential that he continues this treatment. If he doesn't follow through, I will make decisions to protect myself,” Teixeira continued. “I'm not defending his actions. They hurt me deeply. At the same time, however, I believe that addiction and mental illness can lead to destructive behaviors that require professional help.” He added: “I hope there is room for compassion as he takes these steps towards healing.”
Teixeira also said that at the end of January she and Dando were in the States (the couple lives in Brazil) to record an episode of Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Tiny Desk. “He was out of his mind that day,” the woman recalls. “So crazy that the Tiny Desk he recorded will never be put online.”
