The Teutonic Elvellon open their 2024 with “Ascending In Synergy”, the third full-length of a band that, since 2018, seems to have embarked on the now well-trodden path of symphonic metal made up of extremely melodic female voices, keyboards borrowed from most successful Hollywood releases (yes, Hans Zimmer, we're looking at you) and guitars relegated to the mere role of riff factories.
“Ascending In Synergy” is a linear album, in which the top notes never evolve into something more complex and profound: an album composed of a set of pieces sadly devoid of character and too similar to each other, in which songs emerge sporadically like “Last Of Our Kind”, a delicate acoustic nocturne almost whispered around a beautiful piano part or “The Aeon Tree”, a composition lasting over nine minutes including a long spoken interlude, which lengthens an overall tasty soup .
Listening and listening again to Elvellon's latest creative work, one gets the impression that it was composed and released in an artificial manner, limiting itself to putting together musical elements that are overall assonant and pleasant to the ears of a fan base close to the atmospheres created by Nightwish, Epica and nice company. The single itself, “My Forever Endeavour”, arrives as something artificial, in the form of a lyric video in which even the vocabulary used inexorably refers to the previously mentioned bands.
“Ascending In Synergy” is a sufficient album which, from a technical point of view, is solid and well recorded but adds absolutely nothing to what has been said, in the last two decades, by a myriad of groups that represent a carbon copy of the same matrix.
Having reached the third album, a band should begin to define a style and character that make it original and, in some way, distinguishable; this is, in the opinion of the writer, the gap that the Elvellons still struggle to fill.
