These performances were the First of a tour of 233 concerts Exclusive of Elton and Ray in which highly successful songs were performed for the first time: “Roy Rogers”, “Cage the Songbird”, “Idol” and “I Feel Like a Bullet (in The Gun of Robert Ford)”.
The fans who expected to attend a typical Elton concert were faced with a surprising show: the first half of the set with Elton alone on the piano and the second half accompanied by Ray Cooper, in those that are still considered among the best performances of the singer's career. The selected songs represented a particular vision of Elton's career, even without the great successes that were part of his classic ladder.
Speaking of the album, Elton John said: «I am happy that 'Live from the Rainbow Theater With Ray Cooper' is available for my fans. It is an album of which I am incredibly proud and listening to it are amazed by how well you sound. The freedom I felt by playing only the two of us is something that I will remember forever ».
