Drake tries again. Yesterday he filed an appeal to Judge Jeannette A. Vargas' decision to reject the lawsuit that the singer filed against Universal Music Group for the lyrics of Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar.
As is known, in the piece, the most famous of the series of diss that the American and Canadian exchanged last year, Lamar defined Drake, among other things, as a “certified pedophile”. For the Canadian it is a defamatory statement. It is not the case for the federal judge who rejected the lawsuit last October 9th because, taking into account the context, i.e. a diss rap, those words cannot be interpreted as real accusations and therefore cannot give rise to legal action.
«The average listener», wrote the judge, «does not have the impression that the diss is the product of a thoughtful or disinterested investigation, and that it therefore transmits verifiable content based on established facts to the public».
Drake disputes this reading and now, says one of his spokespersons, “we look forward to the Court of Appeal examining the appeal in the coming weeks”.
