Doldrey are right in calling themselves deathpunk. The Singaporean band seems to draw from both the worlds of death metal and punk, combining the macabre and the rebellious into an intense and, all in all, rather nuanced musical experience.
In this new EP entitled “Only Death Is Eternal”, the sound of the guys is characterized by an unmistakable raw grain, accentuated by the constant use of the HM-2 pedal; behind this facade of ignorance and extremism, the music of the quartet stands out for its captivating dynamics, with songs that move fluidly between different rhythms and registers, alternating accelerations and more groovy and powerful parentheses. This approach allows the quartet to create an interesting up-and-down effect, keeping the listener constantly involved. The band's ability to change direction without losing cohesion, with notes that always seem to be painted in black and white, is in all respects one of the strong points of “Only…”: the brazen punk approach translates into songs that are not afraid to move towards various directions, starting from a base in which the influences of Autopsy are evident, to then arrive at an impetuosity that can recall realities with a similar metalpunk nature such as Mammoth Grinder, Bombs Of Hades or Black Breath, even if, to tell the truth, the contagious catchiness of the latter is only touched upon here. Pieces like “Societal Machine” or “Keres”, however, boast a truly agile concatenation of riffs, giving emotions both during a careful listening – in which to go to discover the various nuances – and paradoxically during a more distracted fruition, while one is intent on something else.
Overall, “Only Death Is Eternal” is a solid EP, proving to be an effective bridge between the 2022 debut, “Celestial Deconstruction”, and the band’s next full-length. Doldrey do not betray their roots, but at the same time they refine their songwriting, demonstrating in this declaration of intent of five tracks for twenty minutes that they have a clear vision of where to take their music.
