The Chileni Devs MortVorvm debuts on Apocalyptic Productions, even if it is already evident from the distributed photos, it is not some novels, since there are several hair and brizzed beards.
In South America the metal market lives a dimension of its own – it is certainly not new – with a sort of parallel market and a tide of groups that also achieve great success in its continent but which, excluding some names, hardly overlook the European market. The Devs MortVorvm seem to have a certain active curriculum, while all part of other musical realities, but it seems to us that the only one of a certain importance are the DoomSters Poema Arcanvs that occasionally also appear on Labels not strictly overseas.
Geographical amenities aside, the Arcanvs poem can be a useful connection to describe the five pieces of this EP “The Oldst Crypt”, given that it is roughly of the same kind, or Doom/Death. However, if in the former the references are the English doom of the first nineties and there has been place, over time, for a greater stylistic variety, the Devs Mortvorvm focus on a truly specific model, or the first albums of the Finnish Hooded Menace (when Lasse Pyykkö, now only guitarist, dealt with the item). We are therefore in territories closer to Asphyx, the first Solothus or Coffins: decidedly cavernous voice and relatively fixed structures, with few changes of time and in general a deadly and catacombal atmosphere.
In this sense, the production helps a lot, given that the gorgogant voice of Claudio Carrasco, the muffled battery sounds and the raw ones of the guitars perfectly complete an idea of primitive and suffocating doom/death. To strengthen the connection mentioned with the Hooded Menace, the clear and sinister guitar leads are ultimately the only breath point for the listener.
The EP is made up of five tracks, four in the studio and the re -proposal of “Orgry in the Graveyard” in a live version; The songs are all between six and seven minutes and, if this offers a physical product of quantitative value (thirty -five minutes overall), qualitatively instead everything is not perfect: the macabre and tombstone atmosphere is so interesting, but the songs are not structurally very varied and tend to look like all.
The several times mentioned Hooded Menace have been able, in those two masterpieces called “Fulfill the Curse” and “Never Cross the Dead”, to arrange the compositions in a more fine way, aspect that at the Devs Mortvorvm seems to not interest for now much: it is no coincidence that they co -produce the “acid ordy” of the Goatlords, certainly not a band remembered for the finesse of the sound.
Returning to ours, certainly in “The Oldst Crypt” are consistent until the end (also in the moniker and artwork, emule of those signed by Mark Ridick), but in our opinion they will have to refine their skills to still say their in the future in such a crowded market.
