Daryl Hannah explained why Neil Young canceled the concert in Ukraine. Rocker had announced a free event, the first date of the European tour scheduled for June. «We are in the middle of the negotiations and we will announce the details here. Keep on rockin 'in the free world », he wrote in early March.
Three weeks later Young had to go back: «I apologize to everyone, we had a good location, but there were dramatic changes. Ukraine is a great country with a great leader ».
In an interview with Rolling Stone For the movie Coastal of which he is a director and who documents the 2023 solo tour of Young (the relative live album will be released on April 18), the director, actress and wife of Rocker Daryl Hannah explained the reason for the cancellation.
“Everything wanted to do, the whole band,” says Hannah. «But the authorities explained that they could not give permission because it would have been dangerous for the public, for us, for the members of the band. When many people gather in a single place they become a target. We both remained very disappointed. But surely we will try to go there sooner or later ».
During the Oscar evening, in presenting a prize, Hannah shouted “Slava Ukraine!”. In the interview he explains that it was not an improvised gesture. “Only after arriving there did I learn that the ceremony would be broadcast with 10 seconds of delay in order to give time to teach the bip.” To avoid knowing what he meant, “I didn't even say it in Neil. I didn't want someone to try to dissuade me. I tried to hide my intentions until the last second ».
Hannah wonders why no one else did something similar during that evening. «Strange, especially because we were a few days after that horrible meeting in the oval studio. I thought that more people would send a little love to Ukrainians ».
Hannah says she was in Ukraine in 2014 for a film festival. «I cried when I left, because I had fallen in love with those people. They have a great sense of humor, a great heart and a soul. Even then Ukraine was in economic difficulties, there were still bullet holes in buildings. It was not a rich and fashionable country, but people were happy and full of love. I feel a beautiful and deep bond with the people of that country. And I am horrified by the decisions that are made today in our name ».
