The joke that went around, after Chris Martin sang at the Maradona Stadium Naples is by Pino Daniele, was: and now in Milan what will he sing, O my beautiful Madunina?
It happened. Yesterday evening in the first of Coldplay’s four dates at San Siro, Martin sang the symbolic piece of the Lombard city mixing it with one of his love songs for Italy and Milan: “Tanti places so beautiful (sic), but none like Milan ”.
Before singing O my beautiful Madunina, Martin thanked the Italians for «being so kind to us for so many years» and said that «if it doesn’t come out very well, don’t put it on YouTube». In the half-improvised piece he quoted «Pavarotti and Benigni», he said «thanks for hosting us here» and «thanks to Elisa and Pausini».
To accompany Martin on the violin, Davide Rossi, a musician and producer from Turin (formerly Mau Mau) who has been collaborating with the English group since Long live life. The two didn’t try much and towards the end, as Rossi writes on Instagram, Martin told him: “Please keep playing, I have to run to the other stage”. Forced to improvise, Rossi played the part of Long live life with the accompaniment of the San Siro choirs.
The concert was opened by Mara Sattei and the Chvrches, returning from their performance at Glastonbury. Coldplay will play at San Siro again tonight, Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th June.
