This time the feral and bestial black metal imbued with hidden and anti -Christian themes comes directly from the USA and specifically from California, where the artist Mortem gave birth to the Project Chamber of Mirrors only.
The new “Tales of Blood” is the third full-length years in just three years of activity-both the demo and the long distance debut “Shadow Kingdom” date back to the not far 2022.
This project enjoys a truly metallic and abrasive sound, very suitable for the type of black metal played, which does not provide for truce concessions and where even the use of synth does not detract from the violence of the proposal.
The chaotic vortex of black metal also created thanks to rhythms and riffs that run quickly, seem to belong to a Black Metal traditional tradition not new to these solutions while, if we look at our continent, the feeling of freezing torment can make you back in mind, with obviously the debt unreachable distances, the immortal of “Battles in the North” and the first Behemots of the debut: icy and sharp black metal therefore, with two important episodes such as the “Dominion” Opener and the excellent “The Serpent”.
Not all songs are so inspired, some are a little too chaotic and seem not to have a logical structure to support them, while others add nothing to what has already been heard in numerous other bands. The Tile-Track is a little disappoints, which is only a short instrumental song made with rather trivial synths.
At the production level we can say that the choice of the truncated songs in the end without a real reason (this solution, this, even more radical here than in “pure Holocaust” of the immortal, but to that absolute masterpiece you can forgive everything) is rather annoying.
In the end it can be said that the Chamber of Mirrors project with some inspired songs manages to alternate a very cold and violent black metal, but without having a very precise soul. Band recommended only to the curious of the genre.
