Since news broke of the Titan submersible imploding near the Titanic site on Thursday, My Heart Will Go On by Céline Dion, and that is the theme song of James Cameron’s blockbuster, has had an impressive boom in listening.
Second tmz extensionthe 1998 Oscar-winning song has racked up more than 500,000 Spotify streams since the search and rescue effort for OceanGate’s submarine ended following the discovery of a debris field on the ocean floor.
According to theAssociated Press, the US Navy had analyzed the acoustic data and found an anomaly “consistent with an implosion or explosion in the vicinity of where the Titan submarine was operating when communications went down.” The Navy then forwarded the information to the Coast Guard, which continued the search until the debris was found.
The Titan was last seen on Sunday 18 June before breaking communication with a research vessel. Its operator, OceanGate, offers sightseeing trips to the Titanic for $250,000 per person. CEO Stockton Rush, British explorer Hamish Harding, researcher/diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and son Suleman died in the implosion.
Following the news, the director of Titanic James Cameron, who has visited the wreck site more than 33 times, stressed that the team behind the submersible ignored warnings about the vehicle’s structure: “I am struck by the similarity of the disaster to that of the Titanic itself – where the captain had been repeatedly warned of the iceberg ahead of his ship, yet went at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night. And many people have died as a result.”
