Mr. Rain: “I don't want to follow record deadlines anymore”
You've been away for a while, how are you?
“I'm in a hyper creative phase and in fact I'm dropping singles every few weeks. I went a year without releasing anything, I started working on the new album in Italian and Spanish.
The two singles are the first ones I'm releasing from the new album and they don't have much to do with the sound; however, the soul is the same, that is, the need to communicate for a need, and they are two important songs.
The first because it was the first one I wrote about the album; Casa In Fiamme is special because for the first time I had the opportunity to work in the studio with Dardust.
He gave me a lot of advice. Before entering the studio with him I forced myself to accept any advice and gave him carte blanche. I just explained what I preferred and then I completely trusted and relied on his artistic ingenuity. I hope there are more songs with him on the album.”
The meaning of House On Fire and the story behind the song
Speaking of the single, you tell the story of two people who find themselves in an almost paradoxical situation. Can you tell us about it?
“It's the story of a lot of people, because many find themselves with a person and, in order to rebuild what is falling apart, they are willing to stay in one place and remain embraced by this person even if everything is falling apart.
Two people willing to fight to mend relationships. The song is about all relationships in general, whether it's love or friendship, and I hope people are feeling that. I wrote it out of a need to write it.
I revolutionized my entire way of making music, going back to years ago, when I just needed to write. I no longer want to follow record deadlines or summer hits.”
You played the song to Carlo Contigiven that he is from Sanremo?
“It's very Sanremo, yes, and we let him hear it. Unfortunately I arrived very late and we chose not to continue, but Carlo heard it in the last few days. We are so happy with this song that we closed the master and published it in four days”.
Publishing music without a “set” marketing plan
Why this choice?
“I'm no longer worried, I want to live it as I live in life. I'm very impulsive, I try to take every choice head on and I don't want to follow a marketing plan: it's too set up for my way of living now.
I want the day I wake up and write a perfect song for that moment, close the mix and release. Only for the album we will have deadlines, that needs to be a little more planned, but for the singles I will take it like this. I want to come out with a lot of songs in 2026.”
Market saturation and the rush to exit
Many artists have said these things you are telling us. How is it possible that we have reached this point of saturation?
“This awareness was natural. Ten years ago I had time to study and make a truly qualitative product with a unique soul. In today's world, which moves so fast, everyone tells me the same thing: there is this need (not given by us) to make music after music and continue to publish songs, entering a circle in which you are almost obliged to publish, otherwise they forget you or the world collapses, and so the meaning of the song is forgotten.
In the foreground there should be music and unfortunately, nowadays, I don't see this. I see that many are tired of running and rightly want to take time to slow down for a second. It's not a farewell to music or laziness, simply a certain amount of time is needed for a product you put your soul into.
From the last album, Miller's planetI choose to only post when I need to. Look Psalm: he returned to Sardinia and wrote an album against the current, taking his time and space. I am blindly in favor.”
Doesn't this scare you in the short term?
“It depends… It doesn't scare me because I'm not a slave to numbers, likes, views, so this thing doesn't scare me. My mission is to communicate what I have inside and, if at the same time I can make a contribution to the people who listen to me, I'm happy like that.
I'm not interested in building a stadium or a club for 100 people. I want to do this for as long as possible and, to do that, you have to be honest with those who listen.”
Very often the record label is demonized because it is the one that pushes us to over-perform. In this case, what did the record company say?
“Yes. When I talk about pressure I'm talking about the entire musical panorama, about a system that is going in an uncomfortable direction for us artists. They supported me in my choice to stop and take my time to publish.
I gave the speech I gave to you and they totally supported me. I'm not mad at anyone in particular, but rather at the whole musical movement nowadays.”
Can the need to return to the physical format be regained or are we slaves to streaming?
“I think I and all our colleagues are happy to go back to having something physical, especially vinyl, but honestly I find it very hard.
I am a child of the 90s and I remember that when I was six years old I had the Walkman: I went to the shop, listened to the CD and, if I liked it, I took it, otherwise nothing. The new generations are not used to it.I have two sisters of the new generation and I don't know how many records they have, I think very few. There is passion and affection for the artists, but this thing about the physical format is missing and for me it's a shame.”
Do you already have a hypothetical idea about future live shows?
“I will do live shows in 2026, also because the live section is what I miss most about my job. I do everything for live shows and I am already thinking and studying for the new tour, evaluating methods that are a little against the grain. I will return 100%.
I don't know the period yet, but from mid-year onwards for sure.”
