A fresh slate of films and events has been added to the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival lineup, including the world premiere of a new doc about Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper, and anniversary screenings of Casino, Paris Is Burning, and Best in Show.
Call Her Alex is a new two-part docuseries directed by Ry Russo-Young that promises to explore Cooper’s impressive rise from “podcasting rookie to media mogul.” Cooper and Russo-Young will also participate in a live conversation following the film’s premiere, which is scheduled to arrive on Hulu later this year.
Per a synopsis, the film will follow Cooper as she prepares for her first tour, while also chronicling her career and life trajectory, going all the way back to her childhood in Pennsylvania. It’s unclear, however, to what extent the film will dig into the drama that embroiled Call Her Daddy in 2020, when Cooper and her friend/original co-host, Sofia Franklyn, had a falling out amid contract negotiations with Barstool (the podcast’s former owner and distributor). The official synopsis makes no reference to these events.
Additionally, Tribeca revealed a wide array of anniversary events, two of which will feature festival co-founder Robert De Niro. The actor will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Casino and the 25th anniversary of Meet the Parents; for the former, he’ll chat with director Martin Scorsese alongside moderator W. Kamau Bell, and for the former, De Niro will be joined by co-star Ben Stiller and producer Jane Rosenthal (also a Tribeca co-founder).
“I’m beyond excited to be back with Bob and Ben to celebrate Meet the Parents — a movie that’s been making families laugh (and cringe) for a quarter-century, ” Rosenthal said in a statement. “With the fourth installment of the franchise in the works, it feels like the perfect time to revisit some of the moments that made this film an instant classic. Tribeca is all about celebrating the stories that stay with us, and this year’s lineup is full of those fan-favorite reunions and retrospectives that bring us back to the movies we can’t get enough of.”
Several other 2000 films will be celebrating their 25th anniversaries as well, including Best in Show, with Stephen Colbert moderating a conversation with director Christopher Guest and stars Parker Posey, Michael McKean, Jane Lynch, and John Michael Higgins. Additionally, Darren Aronofsky and Ellen Burstyn will discuss Requiem for a Dream, and Mary Harron will discuss her adaptation of American Psycho.
Other events include a 35th anniversary screening about the classic queer documentary, Paris Is Burning, which will be followed by a live voguing performance. David Cronenberg will mark the 50th anniversary of Shivers, and the Doors drummer John Densmore will commemorate the band’s 60th anniversary with a conversation following a screening of Tom DiCillo’s 2010 doc, When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors. Young punks the Linda Lindas will also be on-hand for a special performance following the premiere of a new 4K restoration of the Japanese cult classic, Linda Linda Linda (which inspired the band’s name).
