Brunori SAS interviews The walnut tree. After the press meeting on Friday 10 January, we talked about it here, I had the opportunity to do a short interview with the singer-songwriter about his upcoming album The walnut tree. Important reflections were born on the importance of a different look, once guided by improvisation and not by planning. All fundamental ingredients for the album. We had the pleasure of listening to some pieces that exactly reflect this expressive freedom.
You talked about improvisation. Have you ever been afraid that there was a lack of clear direction?
Yes, there were moments of great confusion, in which nothing convincing seemed to come out. But patience, mine and that of those who worked with me, made the difference. I was lucky enough to have a record company that knew how to wait. Eventually, there was a sudden blossoming, and one song led to another.
You talked about subtractions and urgency in the creative process. How did you understand what the superfluous elements were? And what was the biggest difficulty?
I succeeded thanks to Riccardo Sinigallia, who oversaw the artistic production and followed me throughout the composition phase. He is like a mirror that does not deform: he helped me see the redundancies, eliminate the superfluous. An important rule was: “Don't repeat things you've already said and said better.” Less is more, really.
And were there moments of tension with Sinigallia?
Of course, not everything went smoothly. But even the moments of confrontation with him were enriching. Riccardo is a beautiful soul, and even the most ferocious criticisms he gave me were always for the good of the work. Ultimately, these frictions gave vitality to the project.
