There's a scene in A Complete Unknown in which Bob Dylan shows up late to a party and leaves shortly after arriving. The biopic seems to have truly captured his true essence, since it essentially did the same thing with TikTok. The short-form video platform is expected to be banned in the US as early as this Sunday, but Dylan just launched his account on the app.
“Explore the world of Bob Dylan, now on TikTok,” reads the caption of his first post. The video is a collection of footage from throughout the 83-year-old musician's life, to the tune of Like a Rolling Stone. The account already has more than 10,000 followers. But the comments are already warning Dylan that the fun won't last. “You have 30 minutes, king,” reads one comment at the top, while another says: “Bob, TikTok is knocking on heaven's door.”
Other users are running out of hope that TikTok will be spared by the Supreme Court before the ban can take effect, so low that they think Dylan might be the messiah they've been waiting for all this time. “Bob Dylan save TikTok,” one user wrote, while another urged: “Bob you have money, please buy TikTok or something.” Some suggested learning Mandarin and joining RedNote, the app to which hundreds of thousands of TikTok users are migrating.
It would probably take RedNote burning down for Dylan to have any interest in using it. He seems to prefer his social media apps to have one foot in the grave. Last year, when Elon Musk was busy dismantling Twitter and restructuring it as a functionally inefficient, bot-filled X, the singer-songwriter suddenly became an avid user. «Happy birthday Mary Jo! See you in Frankfurt,” he wrote in September. Who is Mary Jo? Excellent question.
Another post by I didn't know there were so many book publishers in the world. I was looking for Crystal Lake Publishing to congratulate them on publishing The Great God Panone of my favorite books. I thought they might be interested in some of my stories. Unfortunately it was too crowded and I never found them.”
