The late Golden Girls actress will be celebrated with a new Forever stamp by the US Postal Service
The United States Postal Service is honoring a TV icon. On Friday, the USPS announced that it will release a stamp next year with the image of Betty White, remembering the Golden Girls star's legacy.
Dale Stephanos created a digital illustration for the stamp based on a 2010 Kwaku Alston photograph of the actress, who died in 2021 at age 99. Greg Breedong, a USPS art director, designed the stamp, which captures her “spritely sense of fun,” according to a description from the Postal Service.
“I'd love to send a letter back to my 18-year-old self with this stamp on it and tell him that everything is going to be OK,” read a touching statement from Stephanos.
Although there is no release date just yet, the White stamp will be sold on a panel of 20 at some point next year. “[She] remained phenomenally popular as an entertainer well into her nineties,” read a description from the USPS. “As an avid animal ally, White used the bright light of her stardom to advocate for creatures great and small.”
Along with the Betty White stamp, USPS will honor the Year of the Snake with a special Lunar New Year stamp. The organization will also celebrate the legacy of late pianist and composer Allen Toussaint for the USPS's Black Heritage series, and will honor the work of Keith Haring with a stamp called “Love” featuring the artist's 1985 drawing, Untitled.
“The non-specificity of the figures allows a variety of people to see themselves in this stamp,” said Antonio Alcalá, a USPS art director, of the Haring stamp. “Partners getting married, celebrating an anniversary, siblings sending each other a heartfelt greeting, or even party planners setting a positive tone for their event.”
