Lives Outgrown
Lives Outgrown consists of 10 beautiful songs recorded over 10 years, representing her most personal work, the result of a period of reflection, change and “many goodbyes”, in Beth's words: to family, friends , even to his former “self”. Songs that arrive halfway through life, when looking forward doesn't provide the same emotions as it once did and looking back suddenly gives you a clearer and sharper vision.
The release of his debut solo album is dated May 17, 2024 on Domino. Produced by James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, The Last Dinner Party) and Beth Gibbons with additional production by Lee Harris (Talk Talk), Lives Outgrown touches on topics like motherhood, anxiety, menopause (which Beth variously describes as “a huge test” and “a huge decline” that “cuts you off at the knees”) and, inevitably, mortality.
It is therefore about “songs that address the anxieties related to the fear of growing old“. I realized what life was like without hope. And it was a sadness I had never felt. I used to have the chance to change my future, but when you fight with your body, you can't force it to do something it doesn't want to do. […] People started dying,” Beth says. “When you are young, you never know the end, you don't know how it will end. You think, “We'll get through this. It'll get better. Some endings are hard to stomach.”
Emerging from this decade of change and realignment has left Beth with what appears to be a new awareness of purpose: “Now that I've come out the other side, I just think you have to be brave.”
