“Scream from New York, NY”, the first album by Been Stellaris a remarkably brutal debut – wounded and volatile, it captures a relentless, harsh image of 1920s New York, where tenderness is a limited resource consumed by the city's mechanisms and human connection is a luxury. Leaving behind the fast-paced shoegaze of their early recordings, the New York quintet draws inspiration from the disillusioned sound and spirit of New York luminaries like Sonic Youth and Interpol, as well as the nihilistic, yearning allure of “Iceage” and “Radiohead”-era Bends,” finding a sound at once fearsome, overwhelming and beautiful – a tidal wave seen from below.
Determined to explore new sonic territory, the band followed a relentless rehearsal schedule, even renting makeshift studios on their days off during tours with Fontaines DC and Shame. After befriending him at SXSW, the band tapped producer Dan Carey (black midi, Wet Leg) to unite the disparate elements of their evolving sound: energetic, driving physicality; pop classicism; twisted beauty; and a rich emotional core. The result is a 10-song album that heralds Been Stellar as insightful chroniclers of contemporary youth, capable of peering through the noise and confusion to the dark heart of modern life.
