“Only one that could make me drop the album just a little later,” rapped Drake on new track “Red Button” Drake released the third installment in his EP series, Scary Hours, on Friday, and left a surprise shout out on “Red Button” in ode to Taylor Swift. “Taylor Swift the only n–– that I ever rated/Only one that could make me drop the album just a little later” rapped the artist on Disc two’s first track, following the line with: “Rest of ya’ll, I treat ya’ll like you never made it/Leave your label devastated/Even when you pad the stats, period,…

It’s commendable that Brown would rather make an album about what he’s going through than cater to what his audience expects—as he told us a decade ago, he has no intention of rapping about youthful exploits for the rest of his life. That said, Quaranta often fails to present these topics in compelling ways. On the more diaristic songs, the narratives aren’t as vivid, the rapping isn’t as nimble, and the songs lack momentum. It’s telling that on “Celibate,” the otherwise sedate MIKE easily scores the album’s best verse by injecting some verve into a song that’s otherwise inert. Brown…

How do you follow a smash hit like “Greedy,” which has spent nine days at Number One of Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart? If you’re Tate McRae, you write the equally infectious “Exes,” with a chorus that’s catchy enough to put the same kind of success well within reach. Written with pop maestro Ryan Tedder, “Exes” arrives as the second single from McRae’s upcoming album Think Later. As a prelude for the album, which is out Dec. 8, it fits: “Exes” is an anthem for the unapologetic, even if those tendencies can turn destructive.  “This song was kind of like…

And Dolly’s takes on “Satisfaction,” “Stairway to Heaven,” and “Free Bird” rock too On Rockstar, which finally drops today, Dolly Parton challenged herself to get out of her comfort zone, focusing on singing rock & roll for the first time in her career. She wrote a few songs for the album but the vast majority of the tracks are covers, including some surprising picks. Her rendition of Prince and the Revolution’s “Purple Rain” leans deep into the gospel feel of the song, giving Parton space to vocalize all the melisma she can handle where Prince played guitar. It starts with…

Indie rock supergroup covered the Scottish traditional “The Parting Glass,” with proceeds going to the Aisling Project Phoebe Bridgers has released her annual holiday cover — this time with the help of her boygenius bandmates.
