Recorded at Foo Fighters' 606 Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), “Cartoon Darkness” was recorded on the same desk that gave birth to masterpieces such as Nirvana's “Nevermind” and Fleetwood Mac's “Rumours”.
On the new album Amy Taylor addresses with clarity and irony some of the urgencies of our time: from the climate crisis to war, from the invasiveness of AI to the power of Big Tech, up to an apparently adult generation, stunned by an incessant flow of information and distractions.
According to Taylor, “Cartoon Darkness” is about a world that seems to oscillate between tragedy and absurdity, where everything is tiring and heartbreaking, but also incredibly beautiful. It's the desire to put the phone away, go back to looking at people's expressions, feeling the real world, observing what surrounds us. But it is also the need to create one's own space of escape: a cartoonish darkness, disturbing but playful, which transforms confusion into vital energy.
“The future is a cartoon: dark, but full of newness. It's a joke, it's funny” – Amy Taylor.
In just eight years the Amyl & The Sniffers they went from the small stages of Melbourne's pub-rock scene to become one of the most interesting acts in global rock. With two acclaimed albums – “Amyl & The Sniffers” (2019) and “Comfort To Me” (2021) – Amy Taylor, Declan Mehrtens, Gus Romer and Bryce Wilson have conquered audiences and critics with an explosive mix of spontaneity, “Aussie” attitude and punk urgency.
Their live shows, famous for their intensity and unpredictability, have taken them on sold out tours all over the world, from Europe to North America up to Mexico, India and Japan, passing through the most important international festivals: Primavera Sound, Glastonbury, Coachella, All Points East, Green Man, Outside Lands and many others. The band also opened stadium concerts for Green Day and Foo Fighters, establishing themselves as one of the most devastating performances on the contemporary scene.
With “Cartoon Darkness”, the Sniffers sign their richest and most multifaceted album: from abrasive punk to the most glam songs, passing through unexpected electric ballads.
The album celebrates the tension between anger and euphoria, between chaos and the search for lightness, between the will to resist and the desire to abandon oneself to one's impulses. It is a profoundly contemporary album, capable of facing darkness without giving up joy, irony and vitality.
“Life is work, it's confusion, it's a playground. I want this record to make people lift their heads, even if just for a moment” – Amy Taylor.
