Recently, it has been announced that Malcolm and Angus Young's childhood house, the minds behind the AC/DC, was demolished last month. The home at 4 of Burleigh Street, in the suburb of Burwood, in Sydney, had seen the brothers grow and give shape to their revolutionary musical vision. Here, the future pioneers of the Australian hard rock had taken the first steps, absorbing those vibrations that would then shake the whole world.
The Young family had moved to this house in 1965, when Malcolm was 12 years old and Angus 10. The historical importance of the building had been recognized in 2013, with the inclusion in the register of historic houses of the New South Wales National Trust. However, the register, without legal value, was unable to save the home. In December, the Burwood Square Pty Ltd kicked off the demolition, planning a residential development on the site.
The reaction of the fans was not long in coming, exploding in a wave of global indignation. Among the most heated, the manager of the Utopia Records store, near the historic location, expressed his bitterness on social media: “How the hell is it possible? The childhood house of Angus and Malcolm, as well as by George Young of the EasyBeats, perhaps the most iconic place of Australian rock, was razed to the ground. It was a symbol, a pilgrimage destination for musicians and fans from all over the world. Has anyone moved a finger to preserve it? It is a shame that a cultural heritage like this has been canceled without thinking twice. “
In an clumsy attempt to remedy, Leon Kmita, general manager of the responsible company, has promised to create a bar or coffee in the same place, using material recovered from the rubble. “We were not aware of the history of property at the time of purchase,” said Kmita. “Finding it out for things done was a serious blow. We apologize sincerely with the community and fans of the AC/DC. Even if we cannot go back, we want to celebrate this inheritance significantly. “
But for many, these words are not enough. The demolition of 4 Burleigh Street is not only a physical loss, but a symbol of how cultural heritage is often sacrificed on the altar of urban development. A piece of the collective memory of rock has been canceled, and with it a place that could have continued to inspire generations of fans.
