With the third album in the studio, the time of the proverbial consecrations for the Alien Weaponry, a New Zealand trio who impressed criticism and public thanks to the young age, his tribal metal and the manifesto intention of becoming a bearer of the Maori culture, would have arrived, also through the use of the language you reo in the texts.
If someone had doubts about how much at heart the musicians take their mission, just look at the face of the bassist Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds, recently adorned by Mokosymbol tattoo of belonging to the community (theme of the second track “MAU Moko”); In the same way, even the texts of this “te rā” strive to be committed and significant, full of cultural, social and environmental references, with the inclusion of typical percussion tools in the song “Tama-Nui-Te-Rā”.
The characterization remains at the highest levels, therefore, while at the musical level we notice welcome novelties, with the evolution of the vocal style of the singer and drummer Henry de Jong, which becomes the protagonist of a real melodic turning point, alternating with deep growl fluidity, aggressive parts and numerous sung sections that recall the style of the Trivium.
Songs such as “1000 Friends” and “Te Kore” show a ability to transmit emotions through a mix of controlled screams and moments of dramatic pause, underlining an unprecedented expressive maturity. Finally, the intense “Taniwha”, together with Randy Blythe of the Lamb of God, pushes the band on more extreme registers close to Death Metal. The major influences remain sepulture and Gojira, but in the new registers of “Te rā” there are songs such as “Hanging by a thread” and “MySelf to Blame” which in their development can only mind metal.
We have tried concretely to escape the direct references, therefore, finding other inspirations and relying on the great production work by Josh Wilburn (at the megadeth and Lamb of God console); Thus, even if derivative solutions will come to mind, that brand of clone band of sepulture and most tribal soulfly can finally be canceled, certainly the greatest defect of the first chapters branded AW.
Finally therefore a nice step forward for young people kiwiwhich, in addition to demonstrating a certain compositional maturity, take the path towards a distinctive sound, starting to really embody the role of future promise which, until today, was based only on fragile premises.
