I spend all day thinking about you, and what's wrong with that? We all sang it at the top of our lungs with Santi “Motorizado” lead singer of El Mato at a Policia Motorizado this Thursday evening at Arci Bellezza. A concert that began with a thunderous “Alè, alè, alè” (between the impatient and the excited) and a few whistles, thanks to which it was already clear that the Arcibellezza room was full of die-hard fans of the Argentine group, among whom he had come with the Argentina shirt and who had been queuing to enter since half past eight despite the doors opening at 9pm, which then naturally became 9.30pm.
We entered the Arcibellezza a little damp, stiff and pissed off after a long, very gray and rainy day but a few notes and the sweet and reassuring voice of Saints “Hey, hey, hey who's going to look after you?” (Hey, who's going to take care of you?) to feel the accumulated tensions begin to melt away in the heat fueled by the music that spread through our bodies. Bodies and souls because the profound lyrics of El Mato at a Policia Motorizado they combine perfectly with the band's post-punk and indie-rock sounds, giving us a feeling of anesthetized mental and physical calm.
And in fact at the beginning of this winter which has arrived a little too early in Milan many of us are already looking for a den to be able to hibernate in a warm and reassuring place. And it's as if the El Mato at a Policia Motorizado they were accompanying us towards our winter kennels. The audience felt this, it was evident from the shining eyes with which they looked at the stage and from the arms stretched out towards the band to cheer on the swirling guitars of Niño And Willy.
A touch of red and blue lights, a pinch of space rock and we were suspended in a third dimension transported by notes and words into a parallel, warm, Latin and spatial universe.
Definitely hot also because the tickets for the concert had been sold out for days and the hall was packed with fans, who were dancing like crazy, as the Milanese (sorry) generally don't do. In fact, since we were queuing to enter it was enough to prick up my ears a bit and ask around to realize that Arci Bellezza was full of our Argentine cousins.
The Argentinians are fantastic, unmistakable thanks to their warm accent (and let's face it… even a little sexy) and their demeanor, “the Italians of the Americas”, they say, with the always ready joke that they manage to tell you the most serious thing in the most serious way. ironic. And that's what they do too El Mato a Un Policia Motorizado they tell us about serious things, about kisses far away in time that make us forget the universe, about arguments and then about loneliness, with a note of nostalgia but also of realism and positivity because 'those words don't hurt us anymore'.
The El Mato at a Policia Motorizado they are ironic to the core, from the name invented for fun half drunk at a party remembering the film recently seen, on stage, when Saintsafter returning for an encore, begins provocatively with a “Ah, but how, do you happen to want another one?”.
But irony is a gift, a talent, they say, that allows El Mato at a Policia Motorizado to talk about the sorrows of a lost generation, which is desperately looking for a plan bwho watch the polarizations of the world, the growing inflation from the screens of their mobile phones, in search of a direction in which to go, of someone to follow or someone to die for.
The El Mato at a Policia Motorizado they don't give us an answer but they bring our questions, our dilemmas, the pain of our souls onto the stage and help us alleviate them, at least for a set. And this is the power of their music because in the end on Thursday we were all in the same room, shouting the lyrics of the same songs, moshing and venting our anger, and for a moment we left the super terror that grips our guts.
We spoke for a few hours in one eternal night, a special night in which it was us, us, who received something bright in the darkness. With the hope of being able to start again, anyway, he even says so Saints, the cosmos takes care of everyone. And so… give us something night, special night.
The El Mato at a Policia Motorizado they made us fly a bit, I don't know about you but they catapulted me into a dimension that lies between dreams and memories of my past. I came back in 2016 when I was in Nicaragua and went to listen to local rock bands (like Mily Majuc hey Garcin oh Urban Manifesto in Managua) but in reality I had to write my degree thesis and instead I did the complete opposite. Or when in 2018 I was in Guatemala and on some days I felt nostalgic and took refuge in the music of my country of origin from which I had escaped after my three-year degree.
Who knows if the Argentinians around me, staying at the Arci Bellezza to listen to a band from their country, didn't feel for a few hours as if they had brought them a piece of home (or former home) in Milan.
Who knows if moshing to the rhythm of Yoni B or listening Fire they haven't smelled the scent of the post-hangover asado, the common Sunday morning ritual.. Or the taste of the empanadas made by their grandmother on holidays..
