The Uncut Gems co-director will helm the Sandman’s first comedy project since 2018’s 100% Fresh
Adam Sandler will reunite with Uncut Gems co-director Josh Safdie for a new comedy special set to air on Netflix.
Unfortunately, at this time, there are no more details — such as a title, production timeline, or even premiere date — beyond everything contained in the aforementioned sentence. As such, we’ll all just have to sit here, stewing like Kevin Garnett after gazing upon the mysterious black opal for the first time: “Why the fuck would you show me something if I couldn’t have it?!”
Sandler did spend a chunk of last year on the road with a stand-up tour, during which he reportedly performed a whole lot of new material (at least according to one review from a stop in Milwaukee). He also just performed a small gig at the Los Angeles venue Dynasty Typewriter earlier in the month.
Following the release and success of Uncut Gems, Sandler worked with Safdie and his brother, Benny, on a short film, Goldman v Silverman, about a turf war between two street performers. The Safdies were also set to direct Sandler in a new movie centered around the world of sports cards and memorabilia (also reportedly starring Megan Thee Stallion and Ben Affleck), but the current status of the project is unclear: Benny ultimately left, and while Josh was slated to take over as director, Benny told Variety last year that the movie is “on pause.”
As for Sandler, the untitled special with Safdie will mark his first stand-up project since 2018’s Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh. He’s been characteristically busy with a bunch of projects since then, starring in three movies alone last year, including Murder Mystery 2 with Jennifer Aniston, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (which featured the entire Sandler family), and the animated film Leo. As it stands now, his only project on the docket for 2024 is Spaceman, a sci-fi film set to arrive on Netflix March 1.
