With his online outbursts and on-stage behavior, Matty Healy of The 1975 has earned himself a somewhat questionable reputation. He's not one to hold back when there's a (small) controversy to raise. Only to then regret it and consider leaving social media.
The latest concerns a post she wrote and then deleted about Azealia Banks, another woman who has no limits on social media, and the comments the pop star made about Charli XCX, who as is known is with another member of the 1975, George Daniel, on Healy's wife, the model Gabbriette, and on the singer himself. “Looks like you share needles,” Banks wrote in a post. And in another: “A man would slap Gabi and instead you do nothing, you're too busy kissing other men on stage.”
Healy's reply, later deleted: «If someone talks to me like this, I don't look at her sideways when I meet her at an awards ceremony, I give her a slap so hard that she breaks the world record for mouse jumping that some bitch calls a wig» .
The 1975 singer then wrote a post in which he said he regretted the sentence about the slap: “I can't say I'll hit a girl, it's madness, I'm sorry.” And to Banks: “You can't keep saying such mean things about my friends and my wife, it's offensive stuff that makes me feel defensive.” Azealia Banks' response: «Go fuck yourself, you and your friends, honestly. This is like the third time you've spewed violence against black women. Brutal porn, Ice Spice and now you're threatening to slap me and you think all it takes is a little apology.”
According to Banks, who published some excerpts, the conversation continued in private messages. “Babe, I'm not intentionally or unintentionally inciting racial violence against you, it's just a bar fight. I didn't think it would hurt you so much, if I had known I would never have said anything, I'm sorry.” And again: «I understand your point of view, but I know you know I was just telling you to shut up. I expressed myself badly. Apparently we are both guilty of doing things that make others feel bad or victimized.”
An apology isn't enough for Banks: he says he wants to take legal action against Healy. «He apologized to me and begged me not to sue him, but I'm fucking tired. So people will learn to have a little respect.” A few tweets later, Banks referenced Healy's heroin addiction and reiterated her point about the “horrific plastic surgery” Charli XCX allegedly underwent.
In the end Healy wrote that «I don't have the emotional intelligence/maturity for social media, I always end up saying things I immediately regret. I'll just dedicate myself to music, which I'm good at. Having manic episodes on Twitter at 35 is downright pathetic.” He also announced his intention to remove himself from social media.
The two had been arguing for some time. When Azealia Banks said in November that 360 by Charli XCX is a half plagiarism of 1, 2, Step of Ciara, Healy told her to “shut up, you fucking idiot.” And when the singer commented on Charli's appearance saying that era beautiful (the emphasis is on the past), the singer wrote that «apparently the women you attack are culturally relevant, attractive, divisive, kind. And maybe this makes you jealous because you have a lot of talent, but everything else you're a failure. Just rap, bro.”
