NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: NEW SINGLES REPORT CARD for September 27th
Let's start with the songs RECOMMENDED BY ALL MUSIC ITALIAor rather the songs that deserve a listen in our opinion.
Negrita – There are no innocents my friend
THE Negrita they leave no room for illusions in this new album. The central theme is the harsh truth: wars, poverty and no hope of resurrection. They describe the current state of the world with ruthless realism. Could some say that they see everything too black? I don't think so. THE Negrita they can afford to tackle such strong issues, and they do so with courage.
Listening to it, I don't know if I feel more anger or despair, but one thing is certain: just one listen is enough to feel its weight. And when we need to be reminded of the reality of the world we live in, we will know where to turn.
Raw
Laura Pausini – Hello
After a historic career, Laura continues to reinvent itself and explore new genres and musical horizons. His voice, like in a labyrinth, always manages to find the right path to best express itself. Even if this is not one of his most memorable songs, it is still a light and pleasant piece to listen to.
I particularly appreciate his classic approach to the song structure: simple, like the title itself, but never banal.
Linear
Cesare Cremonini – Now that I no longer have you
From the first notes, the song captured me. How cool, Caesar! His imprint is unmistakable, with his unique and personal style. This piece is truly experimental, you can sense that he enjoyed exploring new territories, getting closer to “generation Z”. From the synths to the lyrics, there's a clear desire to connect with the younger ones, or to drag us long-time fans into a slightly different world.
The contrast between the melancholy text – “Now that I no longer have you, you know that I never rest” – and the music, so energetic and positive, is truly fascinating. A perfect mix between nostalgia and musical freshness.
Curious
Virginio – Black cherries
Loves that can't be lived drive you crazy, and Virginio he expresses it perfectly with the phrase “I'd better stay away from you”. His strong voice accompanies a super energetic piece, with a constant and pounding beat. It would have been perfect for summer, but that's fine too. It's a decidedly disco track, fresh and radio friendly, which will definitely work.
A song doesn't always have to be emotionally or musically challenging. Sometimes lightness, as in this case, is what is needed: we dance, we laugh, and in the meantime we still talk about tormented loves. Hurray!
Decided
Last – Snow in the sun
Last marked an important moment for contemporary Italian songwriting, reaching the top with his profound and emotionally charged lyrics. He has always had notebooks full of words and songs to publish, and even today he continues to write dense texts, perhaps too much so. I'm the first to understand the need to write a lot, but sometimes you have to know how to cut. To my taste, Last he tends to put too many words in his songs.
This new piece, unfortunately, sounds already heard. I wonder why he doesn't explore more in production, considering he is an unquestionably good author. His texts deserve more in-depth research, a production that enhances them better. There's probably a reason behind this, but I'd like to see more innovation.
Having said that, I don't reject the piece, even if it might seem strange after what has been said. It's a well-made, sensible song, but too similar to his other productions. Analyzing the text, “do you remember that phase of mine…”, those who have lived a long relationship know well that sometimes our partner knows us better than anyone else. This can be scary, especially when thinking about new relationships. But why say no to new things?
Melancholic
Fiorella Mannoia – Disobeying
Fiorella he always puts himself at the forefront when he sings, often using expressions like “I” or “I am” in his lyrics. This song, in particular, is a real cry of independence. Her interpretative strength has always been one of the elements that distinguishes her among the great female voices of Italian music. It is no coincidence that, on his lips, some words have a special power and resonance, as in his famous version of Sally.
Phrases like “I prefer to walk on ice” evoke powerful images, supported by truly incisive text. The arrangement is simple and linear, a choice often made to give greater prominence to the words. In this case, musical simplicity is justified and functional to the message.

THE FAILURES OF THE WEEK
Emma Nolde – Tuttoscorre
I think the idea for this piece, in its embryonic stage, was certainly interesting. However, the end result looks confusing and messy. The text is fragmented, the voice seems to wander without a precise direction and the composition is unclear. I wonder: what was the goal of the song?
This lack of coherence is one of the most common problems in the songs that I unfortunately find myself having to fail. It is important to remember that my rating refers to the piece itself, not the artist.
Confused
And now let's move on to…
GOLDEN SONG
Anna Castiglia – Salt inside
R&B pop piece in the hands of this young and brilliant singer-songwriter, who reconfirms herself as a promise on the Italian music scene. It deserves even more success, but I'm sure it will come, and this song and this album are proof of it.
The arrangement is simple, with the guitar always in the front row, and a flavor that this time is a little vintage, a little Venus! Super effective for the very sweet and super communicative voice of Castile. I find that the pieces of Anna have a great flavor of hope, for a music that today often has no taste or smell. This song, for example, tastes like salty tears.
Tasty
The List Representative – The City on Her
I admit without filters that we are talking about a project that I love and support, and which has often inspired me in my work too. The List Representative it is a continuous journey, which explores new sounds and addresses unexpected themes with the apparent lightness of a “way” of singing committed lyrics. The voice of Veronicain addition to being splendidly interpretive, reflects her training as an actress, and as an actress, I can only be pleased.
“The city on top of you” is a chaotic piece, just like a city: it has the dark colors of the buildings and the green colors of the trees. It really manages to show the bad and the good, as in the phrase “television said everything is fine”. Veronica And Dario they often cite the world of the media, placing it in an ironic context full of illusions, almost like in a video game.
Liberating
Damiano David – Silverlines
