A casual Thursday night for guests at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua turned into a once-in-a-lifetime moment they won’t soon forget, as Mick Fleetwood took over the hotel lobby bar for an impromptu performance of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.”
The musician — and longtime Maui resident — was among a small group of guests who had gathered at the hotel bar to watch American Idol finalist Oliver Steele perform. Part of the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua’s weekly musical offerings, Steele was playing the second of two nights at the luxury property, and was finishing his set when he spotted the music legend in the audience. “You are one of my biggest inspirations,” the visibly emotional Steele said. “I hope you don’t mind if I play one more song.”
As the supportive crowd chanted for a hana hou, the Hawaiian phrase used to encourage an encore at concerts, Steele began playing the familiar opening refrain to “Landslide.” It was enough to get Fleetwood up from his seat, as he approached the stage and whispered something into Steele’s ear. A few minutes later, the legendary artist had returned to the room with his talking drum in tow, gesturing for Steele to begin the song.
