Behind the scenes. preparation and unexpected events are at the heart of Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The new documentary will premiere on Disney+ next October and will follow Bruce Springsteen and his band as they prepare to embark on their first tour in six years, which began in February 2023 and ended in November 2024.
The tour of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band was not easy: there were many complications from the beginning, especially unexpected illnesses. Two weeks into the tour, guitarist Steven Van Zandt and violinist/singer Soozie Tyrell tested positive for Covid. The two were forced to miss several shows and raised general doubts about the size of the touring group. Saxophonist Jake Clemons, along with half of E Street's backing singers, also skipped subsequent dates for the same reason.
In March 2023, when it seemed that everyone was safe and the nightmare was over, some dates were suddenly postponed again due to an “illness”. But it's not over, a few months later – in September – the remaining and scheduled dates to conclude the tour were postponed again. Why? Springsteen underwent surgery/treatment to treat his peptic ulcer, from which he later recovered. The tour restarted in March 2024. Let's just say it's been a bumpy ride.
Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will focus on the highlights of the tour. According to a press release, the film will offer insight into Springsteen's creative process through the musician's commentary and “live footage of the band's rehearsals and special moments backstage.”
The statement reads: «These shots follow Springsteen closely, tell a story and tell the singer as he builds his tour setlist. In Road Diary there are also rare archival clips of the E Street Band, footage that chronicles life, loss, mortality and a sense of community. The documentary constitutes an essential and unpublished chapter in Springsteen's autobiographical series, which includes memoirs Born to Runthe documentary/musical Springsteen on Broadway and movies Western Stars And Letter to You». The documentary was produced and directed by Thom Zimny, with the collaboration of Jon Landau, Bruce Springsteen, Adrienne Gerard and Sean Stuart as producers.
