“[It’s] having to deal with the tug of war of traveling and playing music for different people and doing it sustainably,” he says
Mochakk is always on the move — and “digging for music to play” for his fans.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone‘s The Green Room ahead of his performance at Factory Town during Miami Music Week, Mochakk opened up about his music curation process ahead of gigs and his start as a DJ.
“Usually I’ll have a couple moments [before a show],” the Brazilian DJ told Rolling Stone. “I might come across tracks that might sound good together, ‘Maybe I’ll play these two songs together,’ but sometimes it’s totally random… You have to do a rollercoaster.”
Mochakk also discussed his upbringing, sharing that he had “the will to play instruments” early in his childhood and downloaded a mixing application on his mom’s computer by age 12. (He was also inspired by his mom’s love for the Eighties and dad’s knack for listening to blues and rock.) “I was developing an ear for hearing and showing things visually. It was something that came naturally when I started performing,” he said.
Mochakk went on to offer some advice for new DJs: “Diversify your diet and intake of stuff.”
“If you only base your music on social media and you’re going in one direction, you’re going to be a stripped down version because those people you’re looking out saw a lot of stuff to build their musical identity to become themselves,” he said, later adding,” If you have a big intake of the stuff you consume, you’ll have way more ideas.”
Mochakk has yet to officially release any new music in 2024, but dropped singles “Jealous,” “No8da” with Fernanda Oura, and a remix of Louie Vega and Anané’s “Cosmic Witch.” He’s scheduled to perform in Germany and Italy in April.
