Riot grrrl greats Bikini Kill will hit the road this summer with a North American tour scheduled to launch in August.
The run will begin with two shows at the Wiltern in Los Angeles, Aug. 15 and 16, with concerts scheduled through Sept. 11 at the Baltimore Soundstage in Baltimore. Tickets for all shows will go on sale Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT. Full info is available on Bikini Kill’s website.
Prior to their North American leg, Bikini Kill will play a bunch of additional dates around the world. Shows in Mexico and South America are scheduled for March, followed by a European run in June. In between, vocalist Kathleen Hanna will embark on a book tour in May celebrating the release of her upcoming memoir, Rebel Girl: My Life As a Feminist Punk (out May 14).
Bikini Kill have been touring and playing shows regularly since reuniting in 2019 after a 22-year break. The trio — featuring Hanna, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail — originally formed in Olympia, Washington in 1990, releasing three celebrated albums and a smattering of singles and compilations, before splitting in 1997.
Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2020 after announcing their reunion, Hanna explained how the band’s return was prompted by the dual forces of Donald Trump’s presidency and the #MeToo movement. “Since Trump was elected, there’ve been all these times when the news is on and I’m singing a Bikini Kill song in my head,” Hanna said. “It’s like I need to hear these songs… With the #MeToo movement and a president who says, ‘Grab them by the pussy,’ it’s hard not to feel like, ‘OK, feminism’s coming back.”
