The fourth season premieres on HBO Max Jan. 14.
In the latest True Detective: Night Country trailer, viewers get one important message about a particularly dark period in Ennis, Alaska: “the night country takes us one by one.”
In the fourth season of HBO’s anthology series True Detective: Night Country, Academy-award winning Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as detectives investigating the disappearance of eight scientists who work at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station. The detectives, who according to the trailer, haven’t worked together in six years, set aside their differences to crack open the case. The fourth season premieres on HBO Max Jan. 14.
This season features two female leads, a first in the show’s decade-long history.
The cast also includes Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes. Foster, who joined the series in May 2022, executive produces. Guest stars include Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, June Thiele, Diane Benson, and Joel D. Montgrand.
Written and directed by showrunner Issa López, viewers get additional clues on the six-episode series with a spiral pattern drawn on a victim’s face and wall, and one character takes a deep plunge below the iced surface.
The series premiered in 2014 with stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in title roles, and in the second season Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams joined the cast. True Detective then embarked on a four-year hiatus until the third season arrived with Mahershala Ali in the lead role. The fourth marks the series’ first installment since 2019 and a first for HBO, which ended its partnership with show creator Nic Pizzolatto in 2020. Pizzolatto continues to serve as a producer on True Detective: Night Country.
