With the sixth recording chapter, “Garip”, the Turkish/Dutch band Altin Gün continues in the recovery of Turkish music by paying homage to the figure of Neşet Ertaş, singer, composer and skilled musician (a true virtuoso of bağlamatraditional Turkish instrument), without giving up an adventurous and innovative spirit that characterizes the entire album.
Not only do Altin Gün focus on the songs with impetuous Anatolian rock versions (the powerful “Neredesin Sen”), but they challenge the rules with a psychedelic and electronic reinterpretation in the splendid and electrifying ballad “Bir Nazar Eyledim”. With a solid and consolidated repertoire – all compositions are by Neşet Ertaş – the band focuses on the quality of performance and sounds, the approach towards tradition is both full of respect (“Gönül Daği”) and intelligently irreverent and modern (“Zülüf Dökülmüş Yüze”), Altin Gün ventures intriguing and bizarre electronic arrangements (“Öldürme Beni”) and adventurous dub incursions (“Benim Yarim”) which will find admirers among fans of the first Tame Impala.
For the singer and multi-instrumentalist Erdinç Eçevit “Garip” represents a real coming out emotional and artistic. The songs become an opportunity to explore the blues and noir soul of Turkish music (“Gönül Daği”), but also to reinvigorate the Middle Eastern roots with fluid groove rhythmic (“Niğde Bağlari”).
Altin Gün further raise the stakes to the point of brilliantly challenging even the orchestral chimera in the symphony-like “Suçum Nedir”, where the presence of the Stockholm Studio Orchestra and saxophonist Janfie Van Strien shines.
