Seven months ago Matt Cameron unexpectedly left Pearl Jam. What is the band doing? Brian Hiatt by Rolling Stone US he asked Eddie Vedder, interviewing him for this article on the Netflix documentary Matter of Time, a question of time on his commitment to the non-profit EB Research Partnership.
The singer explains that he read an apt and concise definition of the band today: «Pearl Jam is in a moment of transition between one era and another». Vedder preferred not to answer the question about the group's new drummer. “If I ever say something, we should first talk about it among ourselves, within the band, and decide what to say or who should say it.”
In any case, Vedder explains, Pearl Jam are playing together. «We are experimenting, we are trying, it's exciting. It's nice to think about change. As much as we would like to continue forever as we have done – and as we will still be able to do – we are all excited about the future.”
“After 27 fantastic years, I stepped down from the drum platform of the great Pearl Jam for the last time,” Cameron wrote in July, without specifying the reason for the separation. «Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for letting me join the band in 1998 and giving me the opportunity of a lifetime of friendships, art, challenges and laughter. I will be forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans around the world. It was an incredible journey. More will follow. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Peace and love.”
In an interview granted to Billboard he then remarked that the separation was amicable and explained that he had had «some problems with Pearl Jam's three-hour concerts, the constant tours and everything else. It's an art to even be able to tackle that kind of performance… Now I'm at a point where I want to do 70-minute sets that are rip-roaring and that's what I'm focusing on as an artist. I'm in a phase where I want to invest time and energy in projects that better reflect what I want to do as an artist.”
Cameron is among other things working on the Soundgraden album based on the vocals recorded by Chris Cornell before his death. In November the band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After his withdrawal, Dave Abbruzzese, the drummer from 1991-1994, applied to join the group: «I could make a great contribution, but they won't call me. The water that has passed under the bridge is too deep and too cold for there to be any reconciliation.”
